Ticks are more common between the early spring and early fall, thriving in warmer weather. Preventing Tick Bites

Before and after spending time outdoors, there are several steps you can take to prevent ticks from being able to latch on to your closing and bite into your skin.

Before Going Outdoors:

  • Wear protective clothing including long sleeves, long pants tucked into socks and closed-toe boots
  • Apply EPA-registered insect repellent containing DEET
  • Walk in the center of trails, where grass may be more worn in

After Returning Home:

  • Perform a tick check on yourself and everyone who was with you
  • Put your clothing in the dryer on the highest tumble dry setting for one hour to kill ticks
  • Shower

Symptoms of Tick-Borne Illness

Symptoms of a tick-borne illness, including Lyme Disease, may begin to appear between 3-30 days after being bitten. Signs that you may have developed an illness include:

  • Exhaustion
  • Fever
  • Stiffness
  • Headache
  • Swelling
  • Nausea and vomiting
  • Dizziness
